Is Liquid Facelift Safe? Risks, Side Effects and Precautions

Losing your health while trying to be beautiful should not be anyone's nightmare. Social media Liquid Facelift always talk about the “magical” aspects of the procedure. However, this is a serious medical procedure, not a hairdresser service. With hundreds of vital vessels, nerves and muscle bundles in your face, every injection deep into the skin carries a risk. So, is a liquid facelift safe? Is the risk of blindness real or an urban legend?

Istanbul Nisantasi Medlook Polyclinic we work with the principle of “First Do No Harm” (Primum Non Nocere). Our priority is to keep our patients not only beautiful but also healthy. In this guide, we transparently share the dark side of the aesthetic world; filling complications, the risk of vascular occlusion and how Medlook brings these risks “closer to zero”.

The Greatest Fear: Does Filling Cause Blindness?

Let's be honest: Yes, it can. But this risk is as rare as a plane crash.

  • How is it possible? If the filler is injected at high pressure into an artery (especially in the nose or glabella area) and the filler reaches the eye vessel with reverse flow, the retina cannot be nourished and blindness occurs.
  • What are the Precautions? This risk is high in hands that are not familiar with the anatomy. Medlook physicians never use needles in risky areas (around the eyes, nose, middle of the eyebrows), and never use needles with blunt tips. Cannula to use it. The cannula does not pierce the vessel, it goes around it.

Common Complication: Vascular Occlusion (Occlusion)

If the filler is given in such a way that it presses on a vessel rather than into it, blood flow slows down. This is called “occlusion”.

  • Symptoms: Severe pain during the procedure, blanching (pallor) or bruising of the skin (lace-like net appearance).
  • Treatment Erken fark edilirse %100 tedavisi vardır. Hyaluronidase (Filler Dissolving Enzyme) injected, the filling is dissolved in seconds and blood flow is restored. That is why we always have an “Emergency Response Kit” ready in our clinic.

Risk of Nerve Damage and Asymmetry

A needle hitting the facial nerves can cause temporary numbness or muscle weakness (asymmetrical smile). It is usually not permanent and improves as the filling dissolves or the pressure decreases (2-4 weeks).

Medlook Protocol for a Secure Transaction

We don't believe in luck, we believe in science. Here are the 4 Golden Rules we follow to make the liquid facelift procedure safe:

  1. Anatomical Mapping: The vascular structure of each patient may be different. In risky areas (temple, jaw line), we work on deep planes and avoid superficial veins.
  2. Cannula Technique: İğne sivridir ve keser. Kanül küt uçludur ve dokuyu iterek ilerler. Kanül kullanımı, damar hasarı riskini %90 oranında azaltır.
  3. Aspiration Test: If we have to work with a needle, we check whether we are in the vein by pulling back the plunger before the injection (if blood comes out, the procedure is stopped).
  4. Slow Injection By giving the filling very slowly and with low pressure, we create a chance for immediate intervention in case of a possible problem.

Under the Stairs Danger: Why Go to the Doctor?

It is illegal and life-threatening to perform a liquid facelift in “Beauty Salons” or “Homes”. Why?

  • No Anatomy Knowledge: Someone who does not know where the vein runs is like “Walking in a Minefield”.
  • No Melting Enzyme: When there is a problem (blocked vein), the hairdresser or unauthorized center does not have Hyaluronidase. By the time you get to the hospital, tissue loss (necrosis) can begin.
  • Counterfeit Product Risk: It is not clear what is in unapproved fillers and the risk of allergic reaction is very high.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

This risk is very low when performed in a sterile environment (under clinical conditions). However, applying make-up or touching with dirty hands after the procedure increases the risk of infection.

Quality fillings adhere to the tissue (integrate) and do not displace. However, cheap and poor quality fillers may "flow". That is why we only use FDA approved products.

No, no, no. Only Hyaluronic Acid based fillings. Crystal Filler (CaHA) or Smart Filler (PCL) cannot be melted. Therefore, irreversible fillings should only be performed in very experienced hands.

If you experience severe, throbbing pain, blackening of the skin beyond bruising, or visual impairment at home after the procedure call your doctor immediately.
