What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a field of health that treats functional disorders or losses caused by accidents, trauma, congenital disorders or other causes with various methods and enables the patient to move easily in daily life. It is a treatment process that can be applied to many diseases related to bone, muscle, joint and nervous system and is planned individually.

Purpose and Benefits

The main aim of physiotherapy is to reduce the patient's pain, increase mobility and functional capacity, improve quality of life and enable the patient to live independently physiologically, socially, spiritually and professionally.

Benefits:

  • Reduction of pain: Pain of muscular, joint and nerve origin can be greatly alleviated by physiotherapy methods.
  • Increased mobility: Patients gain flexibility and strength in their movements after treatment.
  • Improvement of muscle and joint function: Helps to strengthen the muscles by increasing the range of motion of the joints.
  • Independent living: After treatment, patients are able to perform their daily tasks more comfortably and independently.

Physiotherapy supports not only physical health, but also the mental and social well-being of patients.

Which Problems Can It Help With?

Physiotherapy can be effective in solving many problems that affect your body's ability to move and function:

  • Constant pain It can provide relief if you have persistent pain in your neck, lower back, back or knees.
  • Cervical and lumbar hernia: It may be a non-surgical option to reduce the pain and restriction of movement caused by hernia.
  • Lymphedema If you have swelling in your arms or legs, it helps reduce edema with lymph drainage.
  • Posture disorders: If you have posture problems such as hunchback and scoliosis, you can gain the correct posture with physiotherapy.
  • Neurological disorders: It helps you regain your independence in case of mobility difficulties caused by diseases such as stroke or Parkinson's.
  • Sports injuries: You can recover quickly with physiotherapy in cases such as sprains and strains that occur during sports.
Who is it suitable for?

Physiotherapy is a treatment method suitable for individuals of all ages and with different health conditions. In addition to the aforementioned conditions, anyone with restricted mobility, in need of rehabilitation after surgery, or experiencing loss of function due to old age can benefit from physiotherapy.

Physiotherapy and Exercise

Physiotherapy is not limited to devices and manual therapy methods. Exercise therapies are also an important part of physiotherapy to support patients' active participation and self-care. Exercises performed with a physiotherapist or individually play a major role in the treatment of many conditions and in accelerating the healing process.

The Importance of Exercise

Exercises play a therapeutic and protective role in the physiotherapy process. It offers one-to-one solutions for musculoskeletal problems, painful processes and complications in different parts of the body. Exercise programs planned according to the level of the disease increase the patient's functional capacity, support independence and improve quality of life.

Types of Exercise

The exercises used in physiotherapy vary according to the needs of the patient. Some common types of exercises and their benefits are as follows:

  • Joint and Range of Motion Exercises: It increases joint mobility, stretches muscles and reduces limitation of movement.
  • Stretching and Flexibility Exercises: It lengthens muscles, increases flexibility and reduces muscle tension.
  • Strengthening Exercises: It strengthens muscles, increases endurance and improves physical performance.
  • Endurance Exercises: It strengthens the heart and respiratory system, increases energy levels and reduces fatigue.
  • Balance-Coordination Exercises: It improves balance and coordination, reduces the risk of falls and increases body control.
What are the Benefits of Exercise?

Exercise has positive effects on mental and social health as well as physical health. Some important benefits include:

  • Increased Muscle Strength: Regular exercise strengthens muscles and makes it easier to perform physical activities.
  • Protecting Bone and Joint Health: It increases bone density, maintains joint mobility and reduces the risk of osteoporosis.
  • Pain Reduction: By stimulating the release of endorphins in the body, it reduces pain and relieves limitation of movement.
  • Improving Balance and Coordination: Reduces the risk of falls by improving balance and coordination skills.
  • Supporting Mental Health: It reduces the symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression, increases self-confidence and secretion of happiness hormones.

Posture Disorders

Posture disorder is a condition in which the body's natural and balanced posture is disturbed for various reasons. It occurs when the body deviates from its ideal posture and the natural curves of the spine are disrupted. This can cause pain, muscle fatigue and restricted movement in different parts of the body, especially in the back, neck and lower back.

Our daily life habits, genetic factors, and even the development process in the womb can be effective in the formation of posture disorders. In modern life, especially the constant use of computers and smart devices has increased the incidence of these disorders.

Among the most common causes of posture disorders are the following:

  • Wrong Habits: Daily habits such as sleeping position, sitting and standing posture, and the use of smart devices play an important role in the development of posture disorders.
  • Lack of Physical Activity: A sedentary lifestyle can lead to weakening of the muscles that support the body and posture disorders.
  • Genetic Factors: People with a family history of poor posture are at higher risk of developing such disorders.
  • Occupational Factors: In some professions, working in the same position for a long time can cause posture disorders.
  • Other Factors: Pregnancy, obesity, certain diseases and injuries can also cause posture disorders.
Types of Posture Disorders

Posture disorders differ depending on where and how the spine is affected. The most common types of posture disorders are as follows:

Scoliosis

Scoliosis, also known as spinal curvature, is an abnormal curvature of the spine to the right or left. The spinal line, which should normally be straight, curves to the right or left in scoliosis. This curvature can cause the spine to appear as an "S" or "C" shape. It is usually recognized during childhood or adolescence and can become more serious in later life.

Causes:

  • Congenital structural disorders
  • Muscle diseases (such as Muscular Dystrophy)
  • Asymmetrical spine structure after injuries or traumas

Symptoms:

  • Different height of shoulders
  • One of the shoulder blades is more dislocated than the other
  • Asymmetry at the waist
  • Deformation of the thorax

If scoliosis is not recognized at an early stage, it can increase over time and cause serious movement limitations. In particular, the curvature in the shape of the spine disrupts the overall balance of the body and can cause difficulty in daily movements. Treatment includes physiotherapy, exercise or, in advanced cases, surgical intervention, depending on the degree of scoliosis.

Humpback (Kyphosis)

Kyphosis, commonly known as hunchback, is a posture disorder caused by an abnormal forward leaning of the back. This causes the back to appear hunched and the shoulders to fall forward. Although kyphosis is more common in older people, it can also develop during childhood and adolescence.

Causes:

  • Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis can lead to weakening and deformation of the vertebrae.
  • Scheuermann's disease: It is a structural disorder that occurs when the vertebrae do not develop properly.
  • Bad posture habits: Prolonged sitting or standing in the wrong position can lead to progression of the hump.

Symptoms:

  • Rounding and humping of the back
  • Shoulders drop forward
  • Back pain
  • Shortness of breath (in advanced cases)

Hunchback can cause chronic pain in the spine and, in severe cases, even respiratory problems. Physiotherapy and postural exercises play a major role in treatment.

Low Back Flattening (Hyper Lordosis)

Hyper lordosis, which is an excessive inward curvature of the lumbar region, causes the lower back to appear more hollow than normal. This can lead to lower back pain, hip pain and restricted mobility.

Causes:

  • Prolonged inactivity: Weakened back and abdominal muscles can lead to increased lumbar hollowing.
  • Excess weight or pregnancy: An increase in body weight can put too much strain on the spine, leading to the development of lordosis.
  • Muscle weakness or imbalance: Weak abdominal and back muscles in particular can misalign the spine and lead to lordosis.

Symptoms:

  • Excessive hollowness at the waist
  • Pain in the buttocks and legs
  • Weakness in the abdominal muscles
  • Posture disorder

This posture disorder can cause patients to feel pain and fatigue in the lumbar region. In the treatment process, it is important to strengthen the abdominal and back muscles with physiotherapy and to gain correct posture habits.

Neck Flattening (Cervical Lordosis)

Neck flattening is a condition in which the natural "C" shaped curvature of the neck is lost. The cervical vertebrae, which should normally have a slight concave curvature, are flattened due to incorrect posture and muscle weaknesses. This can cause the head to tilt forward and tension in the neck muscles.

Causes:

  • Use of smart devices and computers
  • Driving for a long time
  • Sleeping on a high pillow
  • Weakness in the neck muscles
  • Spinal injuries

Symptoms:

  • Neck pain
  • Headache
  • Shoulder and back pain
  • Numbness and tingling (in arms and hands)
  • Dizziness

A straight neck not only causes pain, but can also cause problems in the shoulder and back area. Posture-correcting exercises and manual therapy play an important role in the treatment process.

How to Correct Posture Disorder?

Physiotherapy and exercise are of great importance in the correction of posture disorders. Depending on the severity of the disorder, treatment methods are planned individually. Treatment methods used in physiotherapy are as follows:

  • Postural exercises: To improve posture, exercises that strengthen muscles and increase joint range of motion are applied.
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises: Corrects muscle imbalances by increasing muscle flexibility.
  • Manual therapy: Manual therapy techniques are used to align the spine and joints correctly.
  • Balance and coordination exercises: It is especially important to improve balance and coordination in postural disorders such as scoliosis.

Regular exercise and the acquisition of correct postural habits help to improve postural disorders in the long term.
